Grand Island fire crews battle large structure fire early Monday

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- Fire units in central Nebraska battled a Grand Island structure fire early Monday.

The Grand Island Fire Department says it was called to Midaro Drive at approximately 6:00 a.m. According to KSNB in Hastings, the home belonged to Tom Edwards, the owner of Tommy's Family Restaurant.

Smoke could be seen for several miles early Monday, with several local crews responding to the fire.

Firefighters dealt with limited hydrants in the area, causing them to seek mutual aid from several local communities.

“For this fire that is huge, for the city we don’t carry enough water to fight a structure fire without enough hydrants,” said GIFD Division Chief Tim Heimer told KSNB.

Firefighters were using approximately 1,000 gallons of water per minute. tThe fire was contained after approximately two hours.

There were no reported injuries, but the home was considered a total loss.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
