BEATRICE - Gage County officials have approved a couple of major projects in the area of law enforcement….an office renovation at the sheriff’s office, and a new radio system to improve communication for deputies in the field.

The county board approved a $232,000 bid from Lammel Plumbing to renovate a west garage area of the sheriff’s office, into office space.  County officials hope to reduce the cost somewhat, through a design-build process.

Building and Grounds Supervisor Dave Jones says the new area will have disability access, a public restroom and more office space.

Todd Hydo of Lammel Plumbing says there is potential for substantial cost savings. He says the remodeling should get underway in August.

Supervisors also approved a bid for a Motorola Turbo Radio system, not to exceed approximately $278,000.   County law officers say it should solve an ongoing problem with coverage gaps in the county.  Chief Deputy Sheriff Doug Klaus said that problem surfaced again, during response to a fatal accident this week north of Pickrell.   Deputies had trouble communicating with the Southeast Communications Center in Beatrice, with some transmissions breaking up.

The radio system would be purchased with inheritance tax fund revenue in the next budget year, through First Wireless, of Nebraska.  County officials are hoping adjustments will bring the cost down, closer to $200,000.

County officials opted to go away from a statewide radio system, for more flexibility to make changes or upgrades.
