Cortland House Fire Fought, Late Wednesday Afternoon
BEATRICE – Firefighters battled a house fire in Cortland late Wednesday afternoon that apparently began in the basement of the house.
According to Southeast Communications emergency traffic, Cortland firefighters were sent to 355 West Fourth Street, just before five p.m., where smoke was observed coming out of the basement.
Fire personnel and equipment from Hallam and Firth departments were also sent to the scene, along with a rescue vehicle from the Clatonia Fire Department.
It was determined that no one was inside the building. Firefighters made entry to the home from the front and rear, encountering significant smoke. The fire and smoke extended to the first and second floors of the house.
A state fire marshal investigator was summoned to help look into the cause of the fire. Firth, Hallam and Clatonia units left the scene around 6:30 to 7 p.m., and the work at the scene was wrapped up at around eight p.m.
No immediate reports of any injuries in the fire.
