As telephone scammers continue to exploit the corona virus pandemic, The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department is warning residents not to give out personal information over the phone.

In the past couple of days the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department has fielded a large number of complaints of scamming phone calls and messages.

A majority of the calls came from a number registered from Helena, Montana and stated that legal enforcement action was filed on the person's social security number for criminal activities.  The call continues to ask for personal information before the matter goes to federal court and the chance at being arrested.

Other calls are trying to sell test kits for the COVID-19 virus.

According to Sheriff Nels Sorensen, "All of these are scam calls wanting to get the person’s personal information.  If it sounds like a scam, they are asking you for information that they should already have, or they are asking for money, be cautious, that it is a scam. "

Sheriff Sorensen also confirmed that one of these phone calls were able to obtain a resident's personal information.
