MADISON, NE — Health officials say they will tour a northeast Nebraska packing plant that is in the midst of a coronavirus outbreak.

Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Department Director Gina Uhing told News Channel Nebraska today that her staff and staff from Nebraska Medicine will tour the Tyson pork plant in Madison on Wednesday.  Eight Tyson workers have tested positive for COVID-19 and dozens more tests could be returning results soon.

The Health Department sent an email request to Tyson management on Friday listing 10 detailed safety requests. Health officials plant to check on those requests during the tour.

“(We will) observe some of these practices that we are recommending so we can see what is and what isn’t being done," Uhing said in an interview on Sunday.  "And if it is being done, at what quality it’s being done.”

The Health Department talked with local Tyson officials about safety measures on Monday.  Tyson sent photos of some of their safety features, two of them seen here.  Uhing told NCN it was a productive discussion and that Tyson showed it was demonstrating “careful time and attention to controlling this outbreak.”
