Man cited following hours-long standoff in Grand Island
GRAND ISLAND - Grand Island Police said a 55-year-old man was taken into custody overnight after a standoff that lasted five hours.
Police were called to a home in the 600 block of Ashton Avenue near the area of the Cherry Park Apartments around 8:40 p.m. Tuesday.
Sgt. Brandon Riley said this happened after a woman went to the police station to report that she was threatened and assaulted by her husband. She reported being scared while he pointed a gun at her. She also told police during the disturbance her husband bit her on the face. Bruising and swelling was seen on her cheek.
While trying to serve a search warrant, the suspect refused to come out of the house and didn't comply with police orders. Due to weapons being involved and his refusal, the tactical response team and crisis negotiators arrived on scene.
The man eventually surrendered peacefully and was placed under arrest at 1:50 a.m. Wednesday.
Local4 News is not listing the man's name at this time as a means of protecting the name of the victim.
The man was cited on 3rd degree domestic assault, terroristic threats, use of a weapon to commit a felony, obstruction and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
