Swimming comes back to West Point, Free of Charge
Swimming comes back to west point this month on June 15th, and at a very, very special discount.
“We didn’t know what the summer was going to look like with everything that’s been happening,” said West Point Pool Manager Melissa Stutzman. “So we decided that if we offered it free of charge, it would give our patrons something to do this summer at a great cost.”
It used to run $100 for a family pass, but this summer, dips are on the house. All to give the locals some much UV.
“I’m also a teacher and I haven’t seen the kids since March,” Stutzman said. “So I’m so excited for them to come see me at the pool and come get in the water.”
“I think that the families of west point are very excited that we are going to be opening. I envision full capacity next week as we start to open," she said.
It was a decision signed off on by city council members, not the least of whom being the Mayor West Point himself.
“It was three council people, we have a committee, and then we had two pool managers and we just sat down, discussed everything, laid it out, and we just thought it’s just the best thing for the city," said West Point Mayor Bruce Schlecht.
The most complicated issue with reopening was how to handle the annual fees mixed with the possibility of another shutdown.
“Say if we took the passes, paid $100, and with the COVID thing you never know. It could shut us down next week, you know. Things can change," Schlecht said.
“It’s going to be a short season. We just decided let it be free and let them enjoy it.”
Admittance only costs a temperature check at the door. It’s a sweet deal… but the mayor won’t be taking advantage.
“You won’t see me here,” Schlecht said. “Because we gotta have a limited number of people, so someone else, someone younger can have my spot.”
Swimmers will need to schedule a time to swim on the city website before arriving.
