Kennedy: COVID-19 Changes Regents Race
COVID-19 is being blamed for changing the battle for one of the state’s premier education slots.
Nebraska Regent hopeful Mike Kennedy has dropped out of the District 2 race in the Omaha area.
Kennedy, who was backed by former Governor Dave Heineman, won the primary in a close race against Jack Stark and the two were set to square-off in a final rematch in November.
Stark, the psychologist for Tom Osborne's National Champion Nebraska Cornhuskers football team in the late 80's and early 90's, is now the presumptive District 2 winner, which covers most of Sarpy County and a portion of Douglas County.
Kennedy, a member of the Millard School Board and President of the Omaha Library Board of Trustees, tells News Channel Nebraska he pulled out of the Regent’s race in order to focus his attention on the upcoming virus-troubled school year and the possible re-opening of the city’s public libraries.
