Eagles Fly High On Opening Night

MADISON - The Lutheran High Northeast Eagles soared out of the gate and never looked back en route to a Week One 66-14 win over the Madison Dragons Friday night.
Led by the rotating QB system of Hayden Beaudette and Grant Colligan, who each tossed a scoring pass, LHNE cashed in each of their first four possessions for TDs, building a 22-0 first quarter lead.
A quick-strike 25-yard touchdown pass from Diego Gastelum to Jimmy Rodriguez just before the 1st period gun cut the deficit to 22-6 and gave the Dragons some much-needed momentum.
But the Eagles stole it right back, with 22 more unanswered points in the 2nd quarter, and another 22 in the second half. Madison punched it over the goal line once more late in the game on the legs of Gastelum, to put the Dragons into double-digits.
The Eagles' ground game was led by Eli Knapp's 90 yards on 10 carries & 2 TDs, as well as Garrett Boelter's 84 yards on just 4 rushes, including 2 scores. In all, 12 LHNE ballcarriers touched the pigskin on the night, punctuated by freshman Josh Rojas' 45-yard scoring scamper with just over a second left in the game.
Lutheran High (1-0) takes on West Holt next week, while Madison (0-1) battles Heartland.
