The Potter-Dix Coyotes rolled past Sioux County Friday 61-32 in the Warriors’ season opener at home.

Though Sioux County put points on the board first after converting two fourth downs to allow Leif Meidell to score on a 10-yard run, the Coyotes took the lead early in the second quarter and never looked back. Potter-Dix took a 12-6 lead less than a minute into the second quarter and increased that margin to 19-6 two and half minutes later. Sioux County’s Ritchie Gutierrez scampered across the goal line with under three minutes remaining in the first half to close the gap, but Potter-Dix responded with a TD of their own for a 25-12 half-time lead.

The third quarter saw Potter-Dix march down the field and score four TDs, keeping Sioux County on defense for much of the time. The Coyotes’ runs for the goal lines included three runs of more than 35 yards, including one TD on a fumble recovery.

Trailing 53-12 as the final quarter began, Sioux County scored on a seven-yard dash by Meidell, but allowed Potter-Dix to answer with its own TD 13 seconds later. Meidell scrambled in for a second fourth quarter touchdown a minute later, to make it 61-24 in favor of the Coyotes. The Warriors were able to add one more score to the board after Vaughan Mathis intercepted a Coyote pass, setting up a 25-yard touchdown run by Tucker Monroe for the final score.

Potter-Dix improves to 2-0 and will host Crawford on Sept. 18.
