Midland University back online after hack

FREMONT, Neb. – A ransomware incident at Midland University caused a temporary disruption to the school’s web systems this month. University officials say the disruption was “minimal” and that all systems are now up and running at full strength.
Merritt Nelson, Vice President of Enrollment Management and Marketing, said the hack brought some of the university’s web operations to a halt, but the problem was short-lived. Nelson said the university posted an internal alert online for its students, faculty and staff, but officials pulled the notice after the problem was quickly resolved.
As for what the ransomware perpetrators were after, that remains unclear according to Nelson.
“We do not know what they got,” Nelson said. “They did not provide that information. We know it was international.”
As for any potential leak of personal information, Nelson said that there has been no indication of that yet.
“If there’s any verification, the first step is to contact the people involved,” Nelson said. “We have not received that verification.”
Nelson said there were no long-term effects to the university’s system, but a forensics team is analyzing the incident for any potential damage.
