UPDATE - Western Area Power Administration told Kimball city officials on Wednesday they will only need one day to upgrade its substation 10 miles south of Kimball.

Mayor Keith Prunty says WAPA will be able to get the project done on Friday only instead of both Friday and Monday, and everything should be back to normal early next week.

Due to the uncertainty with power supply, Kimball Public Schools has cancelled classes on Friday and Monday.

KIMBALL, NE — Residents in Kimball could spend a portion of two days in March without power.

The City of Kimball announced their power supplier, Western Area Power Administration (WAPA), will be shutting down electricity to the town while making upgrades to its substation.

The planned dates for the shutdowns are Friday, March 12 and Monday, March 15. Outages are scheduled to last from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. both days.

"We are asking all businesses and residents to prepare in advance for electric disruptions," the city said in a statement. "The City will be generating power during these days with our city power plant to supply backup power, however, we cannot guarantee there will always be power to all areas and to expect there will be likely disruptions throughout the day."

City officials are asking residents to conserve as much power as possible during those times.

The Kimball County Transit Shelter will also be hosting a day shelter during those times for anyone who needs power for medical devices or who do not feel safe at home alone during the outage.

The transit center will be running on generators and will have full capability to accommodate residents who need it. Residents can call Kimball County Transit at 308-235-0262 to set up free rides to and from home during the outages.

Any additional questions or concerns should be directed to the city offices at 308-235-3639. City officials will update residents if there are any changes to the dates or times.
