Nebraska City handles Nationals, now eyes Districts
NEBRASKA CITY- In the final regular season game for Nebraska City, Post 8 had its eyes on both the Elmwood-Murdock Nehawka Nationals and also the district seeding discussion.
Post 8 was able to see the sun a little longer than they are used to, with the game scheduled to start at 7 pm, as opposed to its typical 8 pm. However, the change in time did not affect Nebraska City's offense. Post 8 was able to swing through the entire lineup in the bottom of the first inning.
Leadoff batter Zach Tesarek reached on base after being hit by a pitch. Jordan Williams followed up by putting the pressure on the Nationals with a double that moved Tesarek up to third.
Clay Stovall singled on a fly ball to right field to score the first run of the ball game, and then Eli Southard and Quintin Holman duplicated RBI plays. Outfielder Cam Elshire ended the bottom of the first with a two-out, two RBI single that put Nebraska City up 5-0.
Post 8 scored two more runs in the bottom of the second and then again in the bottom of the third.
The Nationals scored one run in the top of the fourth inning to end the shut out. A walk, and then an error from Post 8, set Elmwood-Murdock Nehawka up with a prime spot to score, and Jayden Widler delivered with a double to score one.
The Nationals offense ran short, however. Nebraska City won 9-1, and shift its focus to the District tournament this upcoming week.
According to Nebraska City Post 8 head coach James Widoe, Post 8 is projected the four-seed in the tournament with a matchup against Lincoln Christian in the opening round. However, the proposed bracket is still pending approval from the state.
