Nebraska native Maggie Malone finishes 10th in women’s javelin

TOKYO — Nebraska native Maggie Malone is finishing the Olympics with a top 10 finish.
Malone, from Geneva and a Fillmore Central graduate, managed a top throw of 59.82 meters in the finals to finish in 10th place. The 12 finalists all received three throws, with the top eight distances getting three more opportunities to better their marks.
The finish is an improvement for the 27-year-old after being knocked out in the preliminary round at the 2016 Olympics. Her top finals throw didn’t equal her prelims throw of 63.07, though, which was the second-best distance in qualifying. Malone entered the Olympics ranked 12th in the world and owning the third-best throw of the year.
Shiying Liu of China won gold with a season-best throw of 66.34M, Maria Andrejczyk of Poland won silver at 64.61M and Kelsey-Lee Barber of Australia won bronze with a throw of 64.56M.
