HALSEY, Neb. -- A driver who crashed during a racing event in the Nebraska sandhills has died.

The Sandhills Open Road Challenge board says Wednesday that Leland Sweet has died from his injuries after an accident during the Loup-2-Loup race in Halsey Thursday.

Sweet and his navigator Robert Parsons were airlifted to local hospitals following the accident.

Reports show the car left the roadway and rolled a number of times in the ditch.

Parsons was expected to be released from the hospital some time this week.
