PIERCE, Neb. -- Northeast Nebraska is bracing for flooding.

The National Weather Service has placed Pierce County in a Flood Warning as of Wednesday morning.

The North Fork of the Elkhorn River near Pierce is expected to rise above flood stage late Wednesday afternoon to a crest of 12.1 feet this evening.

Emergency management officials say widespread lowland flooding will occur. It's expected to fall below flood stage just after midnight tonight and water will begin to recede.

The north side of Pierce already has ditches full and cresting with some roads closed because of water coming across them.

Officials are also giving a reminder to not drive on roads with water across them.

Region 11 Emergency Management Director Bobbi Risor says “With the 2019 Flood so fresh in all of Northeast Nebraskan’s minds, it’s difficult to not panic when any type of flooding occurs,” Risor said in the release. “One thing that can be done now to be proactive about the flooding is to make sure your sump pumps are plugged in and in working order."

City and County officials are monitoring the situation.
