Leyton seeking first second round win in 22 years

OSCEOLA - The Leyton football team will play in the second round of the postseason for the first time since 2007.
The #9 Warriors (7-2), in their 19th postseason, defeated Hyannis, 47-12, in the first round of the Nebraska School Activities Association Class D2 State Playoffs on Thursday in Dalton. They'll now travel nearly five hours to Osceola - south of Columbus - to play the #8 Bulldogs (8-1) at 2 p.m. MT on Friday.
Osceola beat Homer, 70-27, in their first round game on Thursday. Junior Isaiah Zelasney ran for 256 yards on 14 carries and scored four touchdowns. He also returned a punt for a touchdown. The Bulldogs finished with 421 yards rushing.
Kale Gustafson led Osceola defensively. He had 16 tackles. Alexx Winkelman added 11 and a scoop-and-score on a fumble recovery.
Osceola is appearing in the postseason for the 14th time overall and their 10th in-a-row (including two appearances as Osceola-High Plains in 2018 and 2019). The Bulldogs made it to the quarterfinals in 2020 before being eliminated by Falls City Sacred Heart, 54-28. They finished as the Class C2 runner-up in 1989.
In 2007, Leyton beat Kenesaw in the first round, 46-36, but lost to Elwood, 52-30, in the second round. Thursday's game vs. the Longhorns was the first home playoff game in Dalton since 2013. The Warriors haven't made it past the second round since 1999.
