HARRISON, Neb. -- Authorities said that they were called to a two-vehicle crash involving livestock trailer. 

The Nebraska State Patrol said that Friday around 7:25 p.m., a pickup pulling a loaded livestock trailer heading west collided head-on with another pickup pulling a loaded livestock trailer heading east. 

NSP said that the crash occurred at mile marker 14 on Highway 20, east of Harrison. 

Authorities said that the westbound vehicle was driven by 67-year-old Ruth Smathers of Lost Springs, Wyoming. They said that the eastbound vehicle was driven by 42-year-old Nanna Flesch of Shelby, Montana. 

Officials said that both drivers were pronounced dead on the scene. 

NSP said that Flesch's three children were also in the vehicle and sustained serious injuries, where one child was ejected from the vehicle. 

Authorities said the child who was ejected was flown to Regional West Hospital in Scottsbluff and has since been transferred to a hospital in Denver. The other two children were transported to the hospital in Chadron, one has since been transported to a hospital in Rapid City. 

Officials said that several animals died as a result of the crash, since both trailers were loaded. 

NSP said that Highway 20 was closed for about five hours. NSP was assisted at the scene by the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, Dawes County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska Game and Parks, and the Harrison Volunteer Fire Department.

The crash remains under investigation.
