Interstate 80 is closed this morning due to severe weather.

The closure was expanded from the Wyoming border east to Ogallala to include North Platte. The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is also reporting an accident on I-80, leading to the highway closure.

In Cheyenne County, Sheriff Adam Frerichs says visibility is less than a quarter of a mile with blowing and drifting snow. Complete whiteouts are also occurring.

"We recommend no travel unless absolutely necessary," Frerichs said.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation says several other highways in the Panhandle are also closed or impassable. NDOT is reporting U.S. Highway 30 is closed, reduced visibility reported. In the Sidney area, NDOT says Nebraska 19 from the Colorado state line north to U.S. Highway 30 is impassable.

U.S. Highway 26 is closed except for emergency vehicles. The closure impacts the road between Ogallala and Lewellen.
