GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is taking steps toward the possibility of expanding a recreation area.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation transferred 145 acres to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to be included as an addition to Mormon Island State Recreation Area.

The park is located north of the Grand Island exit of Interstate 80. Parks Division Administrator Jeff Fields said there are future plans for the property.

“If we ever decide to expand some of our RV camping and camp grounds, we would have the potential to do that on the western third of the property," Fields said. "There’s also some some access to fishing, wild life viewing; and potentially down the road some trail development in portions of this property.”

Fields said the property was part of some mitigation work that was done when they did the Locust St. interchange.

The land transfer between the agencies did not involve any money.

It will take years for plans to be developed. In the meantime, they will provide access to it in the form of a trail.
