Shelton wins first state championship in over 100 years over May-Hay
LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Shelton Bulldogs have won its first state championship in over 100 years with a 54-42 win over Maywood-Hayes Center Saturday.
The Bulldogs were led by Ashton Simmons with 17 points along with Riley Bombeck with 16 points. It was a solid 11 point game from Gerardo Delgado to help Shelton claim the title.
May-Hay was led by Jeremiah Ingison with 17 points and Haydn Farr with 16 points in the defeat, as the Wolves finish the season with a 24-4 record.
Both teams had 12 turnovers in the game but Shelton had five blocks compared to May-Hay’s zero blocks on the game.
While it was just a three point game heading into the fourth quarter, Shelton dominated the quarter, going on a 8-0 run to win the championship by 12.
For Shelton, it is its first state championship since 1919 when it was a class A program. Now Shelton are champions of Class D2 with a 54-42 win over May-Hay and a 26-1 record to end a historic season.
