Ogallala Boys Basketball Coach Andy Gillen steps down, son Carter Brown named successor

OGALLALA, Neb. — Ogallala Public Schools announced a coaching change this week as longtime boys basketball head coach Andy Gillen steps down after seven seasons. His successor will be his son, Carter Brown, an Ogallala graduate and former player under Gillen.
Gillen leaves behind a legacy, compiling a 116-24 record since taking over the program. His tenure included six state tournament appearances, six Southwest Conference Coach of the Year honors, seven regular-season SWC titles and six SWC tournament championships. His teams finished third in Class C1 in both 2019 and 2023, and were state runners-up in 2020.
“Basketball has always been more than just a game to me,” Gillen said. “It’s the relationships, the camaraderie, and the moments with the guys that I will miss the most. Together, we built something special.”
Gillen said he’s not stepping away due to burnout, but to give someone else a chance to lead a thriving program. That opportunity now belongs to Brown, who recently graduated from Graceland University and was a two-year starter on the men’s basketball team. He helped guide Graceland to just its second-ever NAIA national tournament appearance.
The district praised Gillen’s contributions and expressed excitement for Brown to continue the “Truth” basketball culture his father established.
“Watching him continue the legacy we’ve built fills me with excitement and gratitude,” Gillen said. “No matter where the journey takes me, I will always be a part of the 'Truth' family.”
