Exploding battery causes Central Nebraska house fire

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. - A lithium-ion battery causes a house fire in Central Nebraska Tuesday after being left on its charger for approximately four months.
This is according to the Grand Island Fire Department, who was called to a fire at 8:39 a.m. Tuesday morning at 1219 West 9th Street.
Fire crews found an active fire in the living room and extinguished the flames in about five minutes.
All members of the home had already made it outside safely when crews arrived, and there are no injuries from the incident.
An investigation found the fire was accidental and later discovered the occupants left a lithium-ion battery on its charger for around 3-4 months.
This caused the battery to overheat, explode and eventually ignite items close to it.
Damages are estimated around $40,000 and includes both structural damage and loss of personal property.
